Historical backround

Algeria and the Swiss Confederation have maintained excellent relations since the period of the national liberation struggle (1954-1962). The Algerian people struggling to recover their national sovereignty then had the sympathy and support of Switzerland, which, faithful to its policy of neutrality, independence and the promotion of peace and human rights, was able to bring together favorable conditions for the holding of Evian negotiations between the National Liberation Front and the French colonial authorities. This long process of negotiations, from November 1960 to March 1962, will lead to the conclusion of the Evian agreements on March 18, 1962. On July 5, 1962, the Algerian people will have definitively won their independence.
